No -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Microbiological samples were collected from patients, environmental surfaces, and healthcare personnel (HCP) hands from the 20-bed University of Utah Hospital Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU). Samples were collected over 54 days from March 2018 to April 2018. Patient participation was voluntary, and patients could refuse continuation of sampling at any time. Patient samples were collected from the axilla, groin and perianal areas or stool using sterile flocked swabs moistened with transport media. Patient samples were collected daily and up to 36 hours following patient transfer from the intensive care unit or until the patient withdrew consent. Environmental samples were collected from patient room surfaces and unit common areas using pre-moistened cellulose sponges. Sample collection was prioritized for rooms occupied by patients on contact precautions for one of the following enteric MDROs: Clostridioides difficile, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E), or carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). In precautions rooms, five surfaces were sampled: 1) bed rails, 2) overbed table, 3) composite of the door handle, and 4) HCW touch areas. In all other occupied patient rooms, one to three composite room surfaces were sampled: 1) patient touch areas (“near patient”); 2) HCW touch areas (“far from patient”); and if present 3) “toileting areas”. The near-patient composite included the patient bed rails, patient over bed table, and hand-held call button or TV remote. The HCW touch area composite included the supply cart, IV pole, room charting bar code scanner, and computer keyboard. Two to ten shared unit areas were also sampled each day, which included composite nursing station computer keyboards and phone handles. The number of composite surfaces sampled in non-precautions rooms was determined using a random room generator list. HCP hands were sampled upon HCP exit from a patient room after engaging in patient care activities. Premoistened sponges were used to sample palms and fingers of HCP hands. Bare hands or gloves were sampled, depending on which was used to perform patient care activities. Samples were processed and cultured for vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), C. difficile, ESBL-E, and CRE within 24-48 hours of collection. Positive broths were plated onto the corresponding MDRO agar for further isolation and identification. Morphologically distinct isolates were selected for species identification by MALDI-TOF. Aliquots of swab transport media or sponge eluate was also plated on non-selective blood agar to determine the general bacterial bioburden in the samples. All susceptibility results were interpreted using the 2018 Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae were defined as Enterobacteriaceae exhibiting phenotypic resistance to third or fourth generation cephalosporin antibiotics as defined by the 2018 CLSI breakpoints. Testing for C. difficile toxin genes was performed by GenXpert PCR. 2. Methods for processing the data: These data are raw/unprocessed.
