Relationship between files: Low resolution: Each file represents a unique infant skull. High resolution: Each file represents the unique infant skull that is chosen to be the representative for the specific age/sex group. 3. Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: NA 4. Are there multiple versions of the dataset? No -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Institutional Review Board approval was obtained to analyze de-identified axial, coronal, and sagittal CT images of 266 healthy infants (<12 months) from Primary Children’s Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah. The infants had no reported skull-related health issues. The 512 x 512 pixel images had resolutions ranging from 0.2 to 0.3 mm. 2. Methods for processing the data: Segmentation of cranial bones was conducted in Python using OpenCV. Image artifacts and unrelated objects were removed using flood fill algorithms. Multi-Otsu’s thresholding was applied to each CT scan to identify the skull's outer and inner contours. Skull thickness was quantified by drawing radial lines from the geometric centroid to the outer contours at 1° intervals, calculating thickness as the radial distance between the inner and outer contours. This method was applied to sagittal, coronal, and axial views, yielding over 12,000 thickness measurements per skull. Cranial bones (frontal, left parietal, right parietal, and occipital) were manually defined on a template, and skulls were registered to the template using an iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm for classification. 3. Instrument- or software-specific information needed to interpret the data: Python OpenCV - python library 4. Standards and calibration information, if appropriate: NA 5.
